The Dire Straits of Redemption

The Dire Straits of Redemption

Christianity began with a Jewish Messiah. But for much of history, parts of the Church have carried deep anti-Jewish thinking—sometimes from the very leaders Christians have admired most.

This book is a 21-day journey that helps Christians face that history honestly and better understand God’s heart for Israel and the Jewish people.

It was designed to be read over the 21 days leading up to the 9th of Av—a 3-week season known as the "Dire Straits" when the Jewish people remember and mourn some of the greatest tragedies in their history. This year, it will be remembered July 2-23 by Jewish people all around the world.

Description

The history of Christianity, though impressive in scope and reign, has also contained some of the worst actors, at least regarding the Jewish people. Almost from its inception, there has been an anti-Jewish sentiment contained and continued by those who say they love and follow a Jewish Messiah.

Some of the most antisemitic content ever produced has come from the minds of the so-called “great founders/reformers” of Christianity. Justin Martyr, John Chrysostom, Martin Luther, and John Calvin are some of the more prominent names in a very storied past of blatant antisemitism and active persecution against the Jewish people. While these men may have done much good in establishing the Church and bringing much of the world to a knowledge of God, the Bible, and Jesus as the Messiah, unfortunately, the seed of antisemitism which they planted amidst their teaching has also continued to survive, or rather, thrive within much of Christian doctrine and theology. Whether replacement or dispensational theology, there yet remains a seed of anti-Jewish thought and rhetoric, which must be uprooted and replaced. This book was written to combat and uproot the very seed that was planted by our Christian forefathers so many years ago. If we want to see God at work in the world, we should find what He is passionate about.

Right now, the world is witnessing one of the greatest resurrections of History (after the resurrection of Jesus). The resurrection of the Jewish people from all nations, lands, and languages who returned / and are returning to the land of their forefathers—our spiritual forefathers—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Who could have imagined that the Jewish people would once again miraculously return to their land after 2000 years of desolation? And yet, as this takes place, much of the Church sits on the sidelines. For some, it comes from a lack of understanding. For others, it comes as a reluctance to admit the rebirth of Israel as a work of God. Yet, for others, it comes from a place of historical shame. This book deals with the various reasons that keep Christians from engaging with the current miracle of Israel.
